Unboxing and Initial Setup

The battery ships at 45% charge due to shipping regulations. Using the included 10-amp charger, a full charge takes approximately 6 hours. Testing confirmed stable outputs of 58.4V and 10.2 amps during charging.

During this time, you can download the BAT-BMS app. It’s user-friendly and provides information on voltage, amps and watts. With designated buttons for turning charging and discharging on and off, as well as displaying individual cell voltages.

Installing the LCD Monitor

Performance Insights: Load and Capacity Testing

For testing and gathering information, I used a 3000W inverter along with a couple of multi meters equipped with an amp-sensing clamp. I also used the Overkill Solar app, which provides more detailed information on the Battery Management System (BMS). I used this battery in two mowers: A Ryobi RM480e (38” deck) and a Ryobi ZT 480ex (42” deck). With a 33-amp draw, the battery lasted 3 hours and 10 minutes, which equals 103 amp hours. Using the supplied charger, it took 10 hours and 21 minutes to charge.

The BMS cut off charging when the first cell reached 3650 mA (or 3.65V). At 3300 mA, the BMS balancing function activated and continued for about 20 minutes after the charging stopped. Before balancing, the voltage difference was 0.062V, but after balancing, it dropped to 0.007V. This proves that the individual cells are well-matched during assembly, leading to longer cell life.

When charging, there is a maximum of 50 amps. I tested charging at 30 amps with no issues.

Real World Testing on Ryobi Mowers

For real world testing, I mounted the battery to the slide out tray and I installed it in two mowers: A Ryobi RM480e with a 38” deck and a Ryobi ZT 480ex with a 42” deck. The battery performed flawlessly when testing it under heavy loads, avoiding the common problem of BMS false shutdowns caused by inrush currents.

Many users rely on four 12V 100Ah batteries wired in series for their mowers. These batteries are a direct replacement and the factory hold down secures them. The negative aspects to the 4 battery setup is initial charging and balancing, that requires an extra 12v charger and battery tray removal and separate charging and balancing every six months. The four-battery setup is heavier and more cumbersome to install.
